Essay
We have been set a 1000 word essay that we had to do a comparison on 3 graphics novels that have been produced into movies.
First movie/ graphic novel is 300, this film has been portrayed more the a film than a graphic novel because the graphic novel wasn’t well known and didn’t sell well, meanwhile Sin city’s graphic novel was popular so they made the film very similar almost exact as possible for the film.
The directors of 300 have made some of the scenes like the graphic novel the way the lighting is casted and the contrast in the colours. 300 is filmed with a sepia effect for the effect of BC and to enhance the contrast, make the action more dramatic.
Sin city’s contrast in colours is much different to 300 because of how Sin city is more of a darker setting using black and whites, but contrasting the gore with red to make it more enjoyable. 300 uses, gold’s, reds and browns, but contrasting the blood in the same way as Sin city. A character in sin city is called the ‘yellow bastard’ and he is literally vibrant yellow to exaggerate the contrast in colours. The yellow was used to explain the characters background. Odd, but effectual as the chapters name was ‘The yellow Bastard, this method was also used in the way to show blood/gore in the film, it gave off a vibrant and more grotesque feel when it splattered against the ground or walls, the film itself was gory and hard to watch but by using the bright yellow, it made it more eye widening and brain twisting.
By far it was the most appealing film to the gore factor because of the violence used.
Going back to the film 300 the characters are designed in the same way as in the graphic novel using actors like look very similar. The Matrix uses normal colour but enhances the dark colours, the theme is dark and sci-fi so the film mostly uses blues, blacks and greys. The characters are also portrayed exact to the graphic novel like Sin city and 300 have done.
I also noticed there was slow motion used in all 3 of the films. The most well known for it is the Matrix because it has the most use and expresses it more in action, but in Sin city and 300 they used slow motion in a different way by adding more tension while watching the film. Sin City only has one scene with slow motion were as 300 has more.
Sin city is based in Sin city, which is a place where mainly individuals enforce the law, it’s run by police but there are areas were delinquents try to cause trouble. The film has 3 main characters, prisoner who was freed, young cop and the old cop. There isn’t really much of a similarity in story lines to these films.
The thing I have noticed about these 3 films is that they all use green screen effects. The green screen is used to create the backgrounds and colours for the film. If you watched Sin city without the contrast in colours it wouldn’t have that same eerie effect it has on the audience, neither would 300 with the B.C effect with the gold’s and browns. It would act like another other film and wouldn’t have that unique style that is well known. Therefore the Matrix doesn’t have that style it just the storyline and the action that people enjoy. Proving that films don’t need all these graphics because at the end of the day it’s about the story/ plot.
